Basset Hound

Basset Hound: the long-eared philosopher

The Basset Hound is instantly recognisable by its long, low body, long drooping ears and melancholic gaze. Gentle, sociable and stubborn, it is an endearing companion with its very own humour.

Origins of the Basset Hound

Developed in England in the 19th century from French bassets, it was selected for hunting on foot rabbit and hare, where its slowness allowed hunters to follow walking.

Temperament and personality

The Basset Hound is known for:

  • Great gentleness and much patience
  • Excellent sociability with humans and pets
  • A stubborn character typical of hounds
  • An exceptional sense of smell and tracking instinct

It is calm at home and full of humour, but can be noisy (deep bark and howls).

Training and socialization

Intelligent but stubborn, it needs patient, firm and kind training. Recall is difficult once a scent catches its interest: walk on a long lead.

Health and care

The Basset Hound has several predispositions:

  • Back conditions (disc herniation)
  • Chronic ear infections (long ears)
  • Overweight and obesity
  • Glaucoma, ectropion
  • Elbow dysplasia

Its short coat needs little care (weekly brushing). Monitor ears, skin folds and weight regularly.

The Basset Hound in the family

It is an excellent family dog, gentle and patient with children, sociable with other pets. It adapts to house or apartment life, provided it gets daily walks.

📌 Summary

Gentle, sociable and full of charm, the Basset Hound is an excellent family companion for patient owners ready to manage its stubbornness and watch its health.
