The Westies breed
Westies
West Highland White Terrier: the little white Scotsman
The West Highland White Terrier, or Westie, is a sturdy small terrier with an immaculate white coat. Lively, joyful and full of character, it is one of the most popular terriers as a companion dog.
Origins of the Westie
It comes from the Scottish Highlands, where it was selected for hunting vermin (foxes, badgers, rats). Its white coat ensured it would not be mistaken for game.
Temperament and personality
The Westie is known for:
- Typical terrier liveliness
- A joyful and demonstrative character
- Great self-confidence
- Some tenacity (digging instinct)
It is sociable but can be reactive with other dogs if not properly socialised.
Training and socialization
Intelligent but independent, it learns well with kindness but needs consistency. Early socialization is essential to limit its reactivity to other dogs and its prey drive.
Health and care
The Westie has several notable predispositions:
- Skin allergies (frequent atopy)
- Legg-Calvé-Perthes disease
- Hereditary deafness
- Pulmonary fibrosis (Westie lung disease)
Its harsh coat barely sheds and needs hand stripping two or three times a year, plus regular brushing. Monitor skin and ears.
The Westie in the family
It is an excellent family companion, full of energy and adaptable to house or apartment. It gets along well with respectful children and enjoys an active family.
đ Summary
Lively, joyful and full of character, the Westie is a versatile little terrier that requires consistent training and careful attention to its skin.
