The Shih Tzu breed
Shih Tzu
Shih Tzu: the little imperial lion
The Shih Tzu is a small, long-bodied dog on short legs, with silky hair and an expressive gaze. The ultimate companion dog, it charms with its joyful character and great gentleness.
Origins of the Shih Tzu
It has its roots in Tibet, where it lived in monasteries before being offered to the emperors of China and raised at the imperial court. Its name means “little lion” in Chinese.
Temperament and personality
The Shih Tzu is known for:
- A joyful and demonstrative character
- Great affection for its family
- Good sociability with children and pets
- Some independence and pride
It copes badly with long absences but can also be discreet when the home is calm.
Training and socialization
Intelligent but sometimes stubborn, it learns well with kindness and consistency. Avoid overprotecting it: a poorly framed Shih Tzu can become a small bossy dog.
Health and care
It is a moderately brachycephalic breed with several predispositions:
- Respiratory and heat sensitivity
- Eye problems (prominent eyes, ulcers)
- Ear infections
- Spinal disc issues and patellar luxation
Its long coat demands serious care: daily brushing and regular grooming. Many owners opt for a more practical short clip.
The Shih Tzu in the family
It is an excellent urban companion, perfectly suited to apartment life. It gets along well with respectful children and other pets. It also suits older people very well.
📌 Summary
Joyful, gentle and adaptable, the Shih Tzu is an ideal family companion, provided you plan regular care for its beautiful coat.
