Shiba Inu: the little Japanese fox
The Shiba Inu is the smallest of the Japanese dog breeds, famous for its fox-like look and strong-willed character. Elegant, clean and discreet, it charms as much as it challenges its people.
Origins of the Shiba Inu
An ancient breed from the mountains of Japan, the Shiba was used for small-game hunting. It nearly went extinct after the Second World War before being saved through a strict breeding programme.
Temperament and personality
The Shiba Inu is known for:
- Great independence and pride
- Sharp, sometimes cunning intelligence
- Remarkable natural cleanliness
- Some reserve with strangers
It is generally loyal to one person and expresses emotions in nuanced ways, sometimes through the famous “Shiba scream”.
Training and socialization
Its independent nature makes training demanding. You must be patient, consistent and use only positive methods. Early socialization is essential to avoid selectivity with other dogs.
Health and care
The Shiba is generally robust, with a few predispositions:
- Skin allergies
- Patellar luxation
- Progressive retinal atrophy
- Glaucoma
Its double coat sheds heavily twice a year. Weekly brushing (daily during shedding) is enough. It hates water and dirt and often grooms itself like a cat.
The Shiba Inu in the family
It can live well in a family provided its boundaries are respected. It enjoys calm children but may be less tolerant of very young, rough toddlers. It needs regular physical activity and a secure garden (it escapes easily).
📌 Summary
Elegant, independent and proud, the Shiba Inu is a strong-character dog that requires a patient, firm and respectful owner.
