Saarloos Wolfdog
Saarloos Wolfdog: the companion with wolf blood
The Saarloos Wolfdog is a Dutch breed born from crossing a German Shepherd with a European she-wolf. Reserved, sensitive and attached to a small circle, it is no ordinary dog.
Origins of the Saarloos Wolfdog
Created in 1935 by the Dutchman Leendert Saarloos by crossing a German Shepherd with a Siberian-origin she-wolf. FCI recognition in 1981, number 311.
Temperament and character
Key traits:
- Reserved and independent
- Highly sensitive emotionally
- Strong attachment to a small circle
- Natural wariness of strangers
Neither aggressive nor a guard dog: flees rather than attacks.
Training and socialisation
Intelligent but independent, requires a very experienced owner familiar with primitive breeds. Respectful training, no coercion, positive reinforcement only. Intensive socialisation from the earliest weeks is essential.

- Hip dysplasia
- Degenerative myelopathy
- Eye disorders (rare)
Weekly brushing of the thick double coat, more during shedding.
The Saarloos Wolfdog in the family
NOT for beginners. Suits calm, experienced families with large secure enclosed space. Lives better with a companion dog. Avoid with young children or frequent visitors.
đ In short
Proud, sensitive and primitive, the Saarloos is a wolfdog reserved for highly experienced enthusiasts.
