Pyrenean Mountain Dog: the great white of the high pastures
The Pyrenean Mountain Dog, or Patou, is a magnificent white dog from the Pyrenean mountains. Imposing, calm and independent, it is a born flock guardian, now a family companion for informed owners.
Origins of the Pyrenean Mountain Dog
Developed in the French Pyrenees for centuries, it was used to protect flocks from bears and wolves. Officially recognised in 1923, it was a favourite at the court of Louis XIV.
Temperament and personality
The Patou is known for:
- A calm and independent temperament
- Great loyalty to its family
- A strong protective and territorial instinct
- Independent mind (former autonomous shepherd)
It is gentle at home, vigilant at night, and can be barky.
Training and socialization
Intelligent but very independent, it needs patient, firm and kind training. Early socialization is essential to channel its guard instinct.
Health and care
The Patou has several predispositions common to giant breeds:
- Hip and elbow dysplasia
- Gastric torsion
- Osteosarcoma
- Heart conditions
- Short life expectancy (10-12 years)
Its long, dense coat needs brushing several times a week, more during shedding. Poorly adapted to heat.
The Patou in the family
In a calm and experienced family living in the countryside, it is a loyal and protective companion. Gentle with the familyâs children. Poorly suited to urban or apartment life.
đ Summary
Majestic, calm and deeply protective, the Pyrenean Mountain Dog is an extraordinary companion for experienced owners living in the countryside.
