The Jack Russell breed
Jack Russell
Jack Russell: a small terrier with a fiery temperament
The Jack Russell Terrier is a small, lively, enduring dog full of character. Behind its often-cute looks hides a true hunting terrier, demanding in both energy and training.
Origins of the Jack Russell
The breed was created in the 19th century in England by Reverend John Russell, from fox terriers used for fox hunting. Small, agile and brave, it was selected to enter burrows and bolt the game.
Temperament and personality
The Jack Russell is typically:
- Very lively and energetic
- Brave, sometimes too much for its size
- Independent and tenacious
- Playful, clever, sometimes boisterous
It is not a parlour dog – it needs an active, stimulating life.
Training and socialization
Intelligent but not naturally obedient, it responds well to positive, firm and consistent training. Early socialization is essential to limit reactivity towards other dogs and predation on small animals. Recall must be worked on early and often.
Health and care
It is a rather hardy breed with a few points to watch:
- Patellar luxation
- Eye conditions (cataracts, lens luxation)
- Deafness in some lines
- Legg-Calvé-Perthes disease
The short or rough coat needs little care – weekly brushing is enough. Weight management is important to protect its joints.
The Jack Russell in the family
It can be a great companion for an active family. Around children, ensure it is not over-stimulated and that its excitement is channelled. Cohabitation with other pets (cats, small mammals) requires caution because of its hunting drive.
📌 Summary
Lively, brave and full of humour, the Jack Russell is a small dog with a big character, suited to present, sporty and consistent owners. Underestimated, it quickly becomes unmanageable.
