Italian Greyhound: the miniature of grace
The Italian Greyhound (Piccolo Levriero Italiano) is the smallest of the sighthounds â a true jewel of finesse and elegance, both sporty and delicate. Sensitive and tender, it is an endearing companion for those who respect it.
Origins of the Italian Greyhound
Descended from small Egyptian and Mediterranean sighthounds, present in ancient art, it was the favourite dog of Italian Renaissance courts (Medici, Frederick II of Prussia). Officially recognised by the FCI.
Temperament and personality
The Italian Greyhound is known for:
- A gentle, very sensitive character
- Strong attachment to one or two humans
- Playful liveliness outside
- Marked chilliness and homebody side
It is affectionate, sometimes shy and deeply attached to its family.
Training and socialization
Very sensitive, it needs extremely kind training, never harsh. Its physical fragility requires care in play and early socialization.
Health and care
The Italian Greyhound has several predispositions:
- Bone fragility (frequent leg fractures)
- Cold sensitivity (very sparse coat)
- Progressive retinal atrophy
- Dental issues
- Anaesthesia sensitivity
Its short coat needs little care (weekly mitt). A coat is essential.
The Italian Greyhound in the family
It is an ideal companion for calm adult families. Caution with young or boisterous children (fragility). Good tolerance with calm dogs. Poor tolerance of solitude.
