English Setter: the hunter’s elegance
The English Setter is a large hunting dog with a characteristic flecked coat (“belton”) and an elegant silhouette. Gentle, bonded and energetic, it is also an excellent family dog.
Origins of the English Setter
Developed in England in the 19th century from older bird dogs, it was selected for pointing on feathered game. Sir Edward Laverack and Purcell Llewellin shaped its modern lines.
Temperament and personality
The English Setter is known for:
- Great gentleness and demonstrative affection
- Significant energy and strong hunting instinct
- Natural sociability with other dogs
- Marked sensitivity
It is joyful outdoors and calm at home if sufficiently exercised.
Training and socialization
Intelligent but sensitive and a bit dreamy, it learns well with kindness and patience. Harshness is counter-productive. Recall must be trained early due to its hunting instinct.
Health and care
The English Setter has a few predispositions:
- Hip dysplasia
- Hereditary deafness
- Eye conditions
- Ear infections (drop ears)
Its long, fringed coat needs regular brushing. Check the ears and inspect the coat after each outing in nature (grass awns).
The English Setter in the family
In an active family, it is a gentle, playful and loyal companion, excellent with children. It absolutely needs at least two hours of daily physical activity.
📌 Summary
Elegant, gentle and energetic, the English Setter is an excellent family companion for those able to provide the outdoor life and activity it needs.
