Chinese Sharpei

Shar Pei: the wrinkled Chinese with strong character

The Shar Pei is a Chinese dog instantly recognisable by its characteristic skin folds and blue-black tongue. Calm, loyal and independent, it is an unusual companion for patient owners.

Origins of the Shar Pei

Very ancient Chinese breed (over 2000 years), it was used as a guard, hunting and fighting dog in southern Chinese villages. Saved from extinction in the 1970s, the breed was rebuilt mainly in Hong Kong.

Temperament and personality

The Shar Pei is known for:

  • A calm and independent temperament
  • Great loyalty to its family
  • Natural reserve towards strangers
  • A marked guard instinct

It is dignified, not very demonstrative, and dislikes being rushed.

Training and socialization

Intelligent but independent, it needs firm, consistent and respectful training. Early and ongoing socialization is essential to limit its wariness.

Health and care

The Shar Pei has several predispositions:

  • Skin conditions (folds)
  • Entropion (rolled eyelids)
  • Familial Shar Pei Fever (FSF)
  • Chronic ear infections (narrow canal)
  • Food allergies

Its short bristly coat needs little care, but the skin folds must be cleaned regularly. Monitor eyes and ears.

The Shar Pei in the family

In a respectful and experienced family, it is a loyal and calm companion. Good tolerance with well-mannered children. Rather selective with other dogs.

📌 Summary

Calm, loyal and atypical, the Shar Pei is an unusual companion for patient owners attentive to its health and socialization.
