Chihuahua: a big character in a tiny body

The Chihuahua is the smallest officially recognised dog breed. Behind its fragile look hides a lively, brave and deeply devoted dog. It is an ideal urban companion, provided it is treated as a real dog.

Origins of the Chihuahua

The breed takes its name from the state of Chihuahua, in northern Mexico. Its ancestors – probably the Techichi of pre-Columbian civilisations – already accompanied Mesoamerican peoples. Its modern popularity dates back to the 19th century.

Temperament and personality

The Chihuahua is typically:

  • Lively and very curious
  • Strongly bonded, sometimes exclusively, to one person
  • Possessing courage out of proportion to its size
  • Wary towards strangers

Without proper education it can become noisy or hyper-reactive. Well socialised, it is a companion full of personality.

Training and socialization

Despite its size, it needs structured, consistent training like any other dog. Positive methods work best. Early exposure to other dogs, noises and handling helps prevent fearfulness.

Health and care

Key points to watch:

  • Bone fragility (falls, jumping from heights)
  • Patellar luxation
  • Dental crowding
  • Hydrocephalus in some individuals
  • Sensitivity to cold

The short or long coat is easy to maintain, with extra care during shedding. Strict weight management is essential to protect its joints.

The Chihuahua in the family

It fits perfectly into apartment life. Interactions with young children should be supervised because of its tiny size. With adults and older children it becomes a very close companion.

📌 Summary

Tiny but strong-minded, the Chihuahua is a real dog in mini format. Well-trained and respected in its needs, it becomes a loyal, lively companion.
