Bernese Cattle Dogs
Bernese Mountain Dog: the gentle giant of the Alps
The Bernese Mountain Dog is a large tricolour dog with a tender gaze, originally from Swiss farms. Its gentleness and loyalty make it one of the most beloved family companions, despite its fragility.
Origins of the Bernese Mountain Dog
Descended from the cattle dogs of farms in the canton of Bern, it was used to drive livestock, guard the farm and pull small carts. Standardised at the end of the 19th century, it quickly spread across Europe.
Temperament and personality
The Bernese Mountain Dog is known for:
- Great gentleness and remarkable calm
- Strong loyalty towards its family
- Excellent rapport with children and other pets
- Some reserve with strangers, without aggression
It is a balanced dog that copes badly with loneliness and separation.
Training and socialization
Intelligent and cooperative, it learns willingly with kindness. Because of slow growth, training must avoid excessive physical demands during the first months.
Health and care
Unfortunately, this breed has a short life expectancy (7 to 9 years on average) with several predispositions:
- Cancers (especially malignant histiocytosis)
- Hip and elbow dysplasia
- Heart conditions
- Heat sensitivity
Its long coat should be brushed two or three times a week, more during shedding. Moderate, regular exercise preserves its joints.
The Bernese Mountain Dog in the family
It is a quintessential family dog: gentle with children, sociable and present. It needs space, ideally with garden access, and an active but not excessive family life.
đ Summary
Majestic, gentle and deeply attached to its people, the Bernese Mountain Dog is a companion of the heart whose fragility requires attentive veterinary care.
