Belgian Malinois: an athlete with a steel mind
The Belgian Malinois is today the working dog par excellence, chosen by police and military forces worldwide. Versatile, intelligent and tireless, it requires a living environment that matches its energy.
Origins of the Malinois
It is one of the four varieties of the Belgian Shepherd (with the Tervueren, Groenendael and Laekenois), from the Mechelen region in Belgium. Originally a herding dog, it became the dominant working dog in the 20th century.
Temperament and personality
The Malinois is known for:
- Energy that is almost inexhaustible
- Sharp intelligence and a strong mind
- A great desire to please its handler
- Natural alertness and liveliness
It becomes bored quickly and absolutely needs daily physical and mental occupation.
Training and socialization
It is a brilliant dog that does not forgive inconsistency. Training must be early, positive and structured. Very broad socialization is essential to channel its natural reactivity.
Health and care
The Malinois is generally robust, with a few predispositions:
- Hip and elbow dysplasia
- Progressive retinal atrophy
- Epilepsy
- Ocular pannus
Its short coat is easy to care for (weekly brushing). It needs at least two hours of activity per day, ideally complemented by dog sports.
The Malinois in the family
It is an excellent companion for sporty and experienced families. It bonds deeply with its people and can live very well with children when training is solid. It is poorly suited to sedentary or novice owners.
đ Summary
Lively, intelligent and tireless, the Malinois is an exceptional dog reserved for those who can offer it an active, structured and stimulating life.
